A Real Life Hero

As everyone knows, Aunty is an auto racing aficianado. Open wheel, street stock, super-modified, I've been to all of them, including both the Indy 500 and the Daytona 500.

Well, as of yesterday, Aunty has a new FAVORITE Nascar driver, and his name is Carl Edwards. I happened to be watching the TV when Carl won the race at Atlanta Motor Speedway yesterday afternoon, and no, it was not his signature back-flip off the side of his race car that impressed me.

When the announcer stuck the microphone in his face and asked him about winning the race, Carl said he had spent part of the previous day visiting children in a local hospital. A little boy with cancer gave him his "courage necklace" and told Carl it would bring him good luck. Then, he pulled the necklace out and stuck it up to the camera where everyone could plainly read the beads, and said, "Thank you, Dalton."

That gesture touched my heart and made me a die-hard Carl Edwards fan!

Not many sports figures or celebrities will take their moment in the limelight to make an ill child feel special. But a class-act, real life hero like Carl Edwards did!

Funny thing about this is, I didn't know who won the race Sunday and keep forgetting to check. Now I know!

I had no idea you like racing. Why, I've been watching Nascar since I was 6 yrs old. Gah! We could have compared notes. And I've only been to Talladega (twice) but I'm dying to get to some other tracks. Sad thing is, I live within driving distance of about four tracks now and haven't been to any of them. *sigh*

Carl has been one of my favs for a while, but that is definitely a hero move right there. I hope he wins it all this year.

Appearances ARE deceiving, Terrio!

Most people do NOT peg me for a race fan. Actually, the DH converted me. He has been going to auto races since he was a small boy (and knowing how tall he is gives a clue as to how VERY LONG AGO that was! :-p). One of our first dates was to a sprint car race on a dirt track. I couldn't understand why nobody sat in the first 4 or 5 rows of the stands UNTIL the race started and that mud started flying!

There is something about the adrenaline-pumping, stomach churning excitement and sheer NOISE factor in auto racing that really gets to me. I really LOVE IT!

Alas, I don't think Carl will be winning the cup this year. Jimmie Johnson (who is a California boy and another fave of mine) looks pretty unstoppable at this late stage. But Carl is still MY HERO after Sunday.

Carl sounds like great guy. I don't watch Nascar, but I do like Formula One.

Helen,
Thanx SOOO MUCH for loving TWS! I've been trashed by a couple of reviewers lately... at least one of them left me wondering WHAT book did she read? Coz it sounded nothing at all like MY book! :-P

But hearing praise from readers like you makes it ALL WORTHWHILE!

Jane,
I've seen a couple of Formula One races, one here in California and one in Florida. I even caught a fleeting glimpse of the back of Paul Newman's head at the race in California. LOL!

Those cars are FANTASTIC! Wish I had even HALF the money one is them is worth! :-)
